A lipemic sample?

چکیده
CASE DESCRIPTION A 69-year-old male patient with nonischemic cardiomyopathy was admitted for biventricular systolic heart failure. Initial laboratory tests were cancelled due to a high lipemic index of 7 (Beckman UniCel® DxC). A redrawn sample yielded the same flag. The lipemic index did not change following ultracentrifugation in an airfuge. The sample was clear upon visual inspection but precipitated upon mixing with diluent (Sample Diluent 1; Beckman UniCel DxC) (Fig. 1).

Lipemia: causes, interference mechanisms, detection and management
In the clinical laboratory setting, interferences can be a significant source of laboratory errors with potential to cause serious harm for the patient. After hemolysis, lipemia is the most frequent endogenous interference that can influence results of various laboratory methods by several mechanisms. The most common preanalytical cause of lipemic samples is inadequate time of blood sampling af...
متن کاملComparison of visual vs. automated detection of lipemic, icteric and hemolyzed specimens: can we rely on a human eye?
BACKGROUND Results from hemolyzed, icteric, and lipemic samples may be inaccurate and can lead to medical errors. These preanalytical interferences may be detected using visual or automated assessment. Visual inspection is time consuming, highly subjective and not standardized. Our aim was to assess the comparability of automated spectrophotometric detection and visual inspection of lipemic, ic...
متن کاملSample Preparation and Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry for Multiple Steroids in Mammalian and Avian Circulation
Blood samples from wild mammals and birds are often limited in volume, allowing researchers to quantify only one or two steroids from a single sample by immunoassays. In addition, wildlife serum or plasma samples are often lipemic, necessitating stringent sample preparation. Here, we validated sample preparation for simultaneous liquid chromatography--tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) quantit...
متن کاملFrequency and causes of lipemia interference of clinical chemistry laboratory tests
OBJECTIVES The aims of this study were to identify the causes of severe lipemia in an academic medical center patient population and to determine the relationship between lipemia and hemolysis. DESIGN AND METHODS Retrospective study was done on the data from the core clinical laboratory at an academic medical center. Lipemic indices were available for all chemistry specimens analyzed over a 1...
متن کاملHypertriglyceridemia, lipemia, and elevated liver enzymes associated with prolonged propofol anesthesia for craniotomy.
: Lipemic blood was noted in the surgical field by a neurosurgeon after 12.5 hours of anesthesia consisting of infusions of propofol (total dose, 14,956 mcg) and remifentanil (total dose, 25,091 mcg). For most of that time, the rate of propofol was 120-160 mcg·kg-1·min-1 and never exceeded 160 mcg·kg-1·min-1. Lipemia was confirmed by allowing a sample of the patient's blood to settle in a syrin...
